The lost-wax casting is ideal for metal parts with print runs from 1 to 50 pieces. This low-volume process provides prototypes of complex metal when milling would be too difficult and expensive. The lost-wax casting process can be broken down as follows: production of wax pattern with RP machines, vacuum coating of wax pattern with a ceramic shell casting and evacuation of the wax pattern and thermal heat treatment of ceramic shell, metal casting under vacuum in the ceramic shell, removal of ceramics from the metal part. This process is used for low melting metal alloys such as aluminum and Zamac.
